About Us and History

From humble beginnings, Aspiring Medical Centre was established by Dr Susie Meyer in 1995. Susie started seeing patients as a sole practitioner, operating from a sleep-out behind Aspiring Dental Clinic. As Wanaka’s first female doctor, Susie opened her clinic seeing 8 patients on her first day. Thus began the story of Aspiring Medical.

A couple of years after opening, the practice expanded to a new clinic, a converted home on the corner of Dungarvon and Brownston Street. As Wanaka was rapidly expanding, we quickly ran out of space. Patients had to wait in the old kitchen before walking down the hallway to see a Doctor in one of the bedrooms.

In 2006, several local health providers were experiencing similar growing pains, so they gathered to discuss the possibility of providing the community greater coordinated care. From this discussion, the decision was made to co-locate medical centres, dentists and physiotherapists under the same roof.

After 5 years of careful planning and development, we opened the doors of our new clinic at Wanaka Lakes Health Centre, just in time for winter 2011.

The practice continues to grow and today, we care for approximately 6000 enrolled patients. Here at Aspiring Medical, we pride ourselves on providing quality care to the Wanaka community and its visitors. With the nearest hospital being an hour away, we are experienced to manage the challenges of a rural health setting, including providing quality acute and emergency care.
